Have You Left Your First Love?

“Nevertheless I have somewhat against thee, because thou hast left thy first love.” (Revelations 2:4)

To sum up the problem: they were doing all the right things, but no longer for the right reason. Their first love, the motivating force behind doing the right things, had changed. It had shifted to something, or someone else. Jesus was still a part of the reason or motivation, but he was no longer the first and most important reason!

Many people cannot fathom how this could be. It is often because they do not really fathom, or comprehend the depth of love and devotion that God requires. They may be able to conceptualize it in their mind, but in their heart they really do not have it. In their heart they actually equate this to the level that human love operates at. But this is based upon divine love. The devotion and sacrificial love that Jesus brought down to man by his sacrifice and infilling of the true Holy Spirit.

Jesus was asked what is the “first” and most important commandment, and his reply was very clearly stated:

“The first of all the commandments is, Hear, O Israel; The Lord our God is one Lord: And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment.” (Mark 12:29-30)

The Lord is “one Lord”, he does not share this position with anyone else, nor anything else. Therefore the Lord requires from us, not some, not most, but all our: heart, soul, mind, and strength. Anything less than this is not “first”. And if not “first” there is a resulting consequence that will inevitably follow, which will result in us doing what we do for the primary motivation of pleasing the mind of some person or group of people, or ourselves. This will lead to people being “king” in the church, and not Jesus Christ. The result of this will be that the city that is supposed to be “set on a hill” (the light of the single, standout church of God) will end up coming down to the level of being controlled by men, including all the associated politics and opinions of men that comes with that. (see Rev 8:8)

The light of the one true church of God is supposed to stand out bright and clear in the dark night of sin that covers the world; just like the ancient city of Jerusalem sat on a hill, and at night the lights (burning lamps) could be seen a far off as a mountain burning in the night. In Matt 5:14-16 Christ speaks concerning this light of the church:

“Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.”

Did people leave their first love soon after the early Christians started out. Yes. Has this happened again since that time. Yes. In fact, within the last hundred years this has happened too many times and in too many places.

Many places that one time stood out clear for Jesus Christ, and free from all sin and division: don’t any more! At one time they were part of the clear candlestick light of the church of God. Today they have fallen from their place, and now men rule there – not Jesus Christ. They still claim the name, and they claim to be servants of Christ, but men have established their own church identity by adding their requirements, and by no longer teaching the full Word of God. Especially, they have left off their first love – Jesus Christ, and the important work Jesus died for: the seeking and saving of the lost for God’s glory!

  1. To remember your first love is your testimony. Which is the reason and means by how we were saved to begin with.

I have no idea what that means to you but it means alot to me.

Also, remember why our testimony is so strong?
We will judge the angels with our testimony!

Our first love, is not just our love for Jesus. But, it was how He brought us to Him!

Remember the fire you had when you first gave your life to the Lord. It will shed insight into your life and relashionship now!..

  2. Thank you for your comment.
While it is true that the scripture states “Know ye not that we shall judge angels?” (1 Corinthians 6:3) we must remember that the word angel in the original means “message bearer” which also could include an unfaithful pastor or preacher.
Now the reality is that a true testimony (a true life lived faithful to Jesus and his word) has judged many an unfaithful message bearer throughout history and especially today.
This also is what the book of Revelation is about – showing how the true testimony of Jesus working in the life of people has and will judge the evil and false ways of: false preachers, false churches, and devilish spirits (when any of them try to tempt, deceive and control).

  3. Amen brother, for the past three months God has been teaching me to know Him as His Love. To know God by the name Agape. He has been showing me how to seek not His feet or His face but how to seek His heart. I don’t agree with the comment about our testimony being our first love. Because my love for God isn’t what I have done, but what God has put in me. I love God with all my heart and just desire to know God’s heart and the secrets therein.

  4. I think a clearer way to say it would be: Our testimony is the reflection of what is in our heart, and will show if Jesus is our first love or not. This is what Jesus taught us:

“A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh.” ~ Luke 6:45

  5. I think our first love was the Heavenly Father himself, and that was what we left…We left it to try and experience some other realm. The grass is greener on the other side type of thing…

  6. I am searching for the meaning…..I thought I am doing all the right things….He says, Consecrate to me, your First Love……you know what my first love is right now?. Myself…it is horrible…how can it be myself when I am so busy laying my life down, humbling myself, obeying Him, reading Scripture, praying, charity work, giving, tithing?

“Nevertheless I have somewhat against thee, because thou hast left thy first love.” (Revelations 2:4)

To sum up the problem: they were doing all the right things, but no longer for the right reason. Their first love, the motivating force behind doing the right things, had changed. It had shifted to something, or someone else. Jesus was still a part of the reason or motivation, but he was no longer the first and most important reason!

Praise God that He shows us where we are wrong and wooes us back to His loving loving arms….Oh how I love Jesus, because He first loved me!

    Faith

    • May the Lord bless you Faith as you seek and fully consecrate your life and purpose to His. It will cost us much, but the gains in Christ are forever!

“And Jesus answered and said, Verily I say unto you, There is no man that hath left house, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my sake, and the gospel’s, But he shall receive an hundredfold now in this time, houses, and brethren, and sisters, and mothers, and children, and lands, with persecutions; and in the world to come eternal life.” ~ Mark 10:29-30

  7. During a brief dark moment of being tested for my faith, I once angrily asked God why I was born into this world. Months later, Jesus answered me in Church. I didn’t know He still remembered my shamefully arrogant and disrespectful question and that He was determined to answer it. He showed me all those little kindergarten children singing worship songs during the Holy Mass. I thought God must be really happy to see so many little innocent souls glorifying him through their singing. It must be pretty comforting for Him and the Blessed Mother to see this seemingly ordinary activity, like a break from the burdensome and painful time watching the world and its sins. And then Jesus told me clearly, “Remember that question you asked me? I now give you My answer. You were born to love Me. Since your birth, your childhood you were always meant to love Me.”
And I cried so hard because I realized that I had wasted more than 10 years of my life on useless sparkly distractions, on all the wrong things, coping mechanisms and people. He was just waiting for me to come back to Him, my First Love.

    • Thank you Christina for your comment. Many “things” and pressures in this life are designed to distract us away from the attention on our “first love”. This is especially true today when very many in their human marriages are distracted with thoughts about someone else and the first love that they had for their companion has began to grow dim. If the heart does not completely repent and turn away from this, they end up some day being unfaithful. So is the way that the relationship with Christ has become with most people. They first move their “first love” devotion away with thoughts and a desire towards some worldly purpose, and not after Christ. Today that worldly purpose has “religious robes” on so it is even more deceitful. So eventually, while still claiming to be married to Christ, they take pleasure in sin. They also become unfaithful.

Very sad estate of most all who claim to go to “Church” today. But the Revelation message exposes this as an unfaithful harlot heart condition called “Babylon!” Everyone must flee out of there if they are to be faithful to Jesus! (see Revelation 18th chapter)
